Daégon watched the scene, a soft smirk on her face. That was the reason he'd been chosen as the quartermaster. She carried much respect for the man. He was a good leader. She approached him, "Sir, I've planned a range test on the cannons tomorrow. If my calculations are correct, I'll only need 2 shots per cannon."
Ustartes Regarded Daegon for a moment then said, " Very good Daegon I will expect a full report after you are finsihed "
He was about to dismiss her when he added " How are you feeling about our decision to go on the account? You may speak freely "
She looked out to the sea, "I think when your back against the wall, you don't have a choice but to do what it takes to survive." She believed it one hundred percent. "I might have seemed eager to go to piracy, but it's only because I understand that all other options would have been suicide." She said, turning to face him. "What do you think, if you don't mind me asking?"
" I am not sure what I think but we have made a commitment and i back it. It appeared to be one of the only options we had at the time and it was by far the most logical one. Had we not made a decision the ship would have fallen to anarchy. Pirates we may be but order we will have. This works out for all of us."
Ustartes began a slow walk keeping his head tilted to indicate Daegon was to follow him.
Daégon nodded, "I agree whole-heartedly." She said, giving him a soft smile. She looked out at the crew, noticing their eyes following her. Slhe looked back at the quartermaster. "The crew either glares at me in spite or lust. I hope they understand that my job comes first. And I hope you understand the same. My loyaly is with the ship and it's crew. I'm not here to manipulate."
Ustartes suddenly looked serious " Let it be known that the penalty for sexual assault on a female crew member is castration. Pirate, sailor i dont care what we are I will not stand for savagery"
Ustartes continued his walk " AS for respect and spite it takes time. Once we went on the account everyone started from scratch. Repect must be earned as I must earn loylaty. I will not lie to you I have ill feelings about women on board but I am willing to be proved wrong if you are willing to prove me wrong"
Ustartes gave a sort of wry smile and walked on.
" My main concern however isnt you at all, I can spot loyalty and mutineers. Its a gift, in the eyes of some of these men i can see that they are one missed meal, one night without a drink or even one more week away from the warmth of a woman before the thin veil of humainty is lost and they wreak havoc"
From his pocket took a dried lemon, pitiful and at the point of rotting but still edible. Slicing it in half he offered half to Daegon.
" Eat this, my studies tell me that the juice will keep sickness at bay "
"Coming through!" Claude called out in front of him, though he didn't need to - even Moses wouldn't be able to part the crowds this fast. Although he didn't blame them, the buckets' mysterious dark green-tinted sludge that the cook had given him to get rid of smelled awful, and the thought of it getting on any part of him or his clothes scared Claude half to death. It definitely made him question what they were being served for meals at the very least.
Claude climbed the stairs to the upper deck slowly, trying to slosh the buckets' contents minimally. He sighed with relief when he was finally up on deck and was out of the darkness. He was home free now, he could see the railing. He'd be free of this muck in just a minute, just a few more steps and-
"Sorry, sir! Sorry, sir!" Claude cried, trying to dance around Ustartes and Daégon who he'd been unable to see coming from the side with his vision focused ahead of him. He tripped clumsily as he tried to spin around the two, sending two of the four buckets crashing onto the deck. Claude caught himself on the railing, letting an agitated growl rip through his throat as he threw - almost violently - the contents of the two remaining buckets overboard. The last thing he needed was another mess to clean up!
Claude put a hand to his head, but otherwise composed himself before turning to speak to Ustartes. "I'm truly sorry, sir," he said, gesturing hopelessly at the mess he'd made. "I wasn't paying attention. I'll get this cleaned up in just a moment, sir."
Ustartes looked down at his slice of lemon now lying in the pile of sludge on the deck. He was angry for a moment then looked up at Claude.
" It is forgiven lad but let it be a lesson to you. On the deck constant vigilance is required. Never run unless you have absolute need of it. Always expect there to be somebody around the corner."
He smiled slightly to soften the reproach
" Get this cleaned up, go to the carpernter and see if he has any sawdust. It will make it easier to gather from the deck. See that its all gone lest it rot the wood. I dont like to think about what goes into our cooking"
"Of course, sir, I'll get on it right away," Claude said quickly as he gathered the buckets from the ground, throwing what was left in them overboard. He was about to run off and find the carpenter and a mop, but he thought it better to pay a little more respect to Ustartes than just running off. "Is there anything else you need me to do after I've gotten this cleaned up, sir?" he asked politely.
" you make take two hours of leisure time after your kitchen chores Claude. May i suggest you go to the cannons with Daegon if she will have you and learn a thing or two. OF course the time is yours to spend "
Daégon smiled, the boys behavior reminding her of her own at his age. "I'd be more then happy to show you the cannons, if you're interested." She gave the boy a soft, motherly smile, before looking over to Ustartes, "After inspections, of course."
" Of course " Replied Ustartes. Daegon make to your quartes. I shall be along in 15 minutes to inspect them. Also all firearms and sword. Claude I know you sleep in the Kitchen for now so i will let it slide.
Although i think there is an option. If you use your spare time over the coming days to clean out the small storage room beside the food stores you make it your quarters. A boy can not become a man sleeping on the floor of the kitchen.
Daegon i will see you shortly..
Ustartes walked off
